Then Ford came along with the Model T, making cars affordable. Well done to Henry. Today the challenge is to make automotive transport clean, in a sustainable world, for a healthier future.
There is no limit to the design of vehicles that are entered into the JVH2 World Hydrogen Trophy series of events to demonstrate the world's most economical hydrogen powered agricultural machinery in the world. Inspired by the words of Jules Verne.
It is Open Class.
You can field an existing vehicle, suitably converted with new powerplant, or custom build your agricultural equipment, tractors, combine harvesters and ploughs. It is up to you, so long as the equipment category was previously powered by diesel engines. Diesel engines are compression ignition - internal combustion engines. Hydrogen designs man be based on diesel blocks and cranks, or beefed up petrol engines, but use spark plugs to ignite the low density fuel, typically increasing the charge using turbochargers, and injectors. The idea being to keep the torque characteristics that operators are used to.
More than likely, the cost of producing your entry will play a part, as will physics and logistics. In this case logistics may present more of a challenge, as to the availability of fuel. Since, at the moment, there is insufficient green hydrogen, and the infrastructure for the supply of hydrogen or H2 compounds, is one of the key focus areas.
JCB HYDROGEN ENGINE
The challenge is not only to be able to continue operating construction machinery, without serious impediment, but to be able to carry on essential building and earth moving works as before. Marks will be awarded against (tons moved per €euro) but also the cost of purchase and operating/servicing costs over at least 12 months. Help in formulating these rules is welcomed from plant and engine manufacturers.
Hence, the trophy will be awarded in stages.
Stage 1. A first award being for ease of operation compared to the equivalent diesel vehicle.
Stage 2. A second award will follow for operational cost in relation to rotovating, ploughing or harvesting of a measured area, as compared to the the same area equivalent using an equivalent diesel powered vehicle. Dependent on hydrogen compound and availability.
Stage 3. A third stage award will follow taking into account operational and servicing costs over a period of 60 months.
AWESOME AGRICULTURAL MACHINES
The one rule that competitors must work to, is using hydrogen fuel to power their internal combustion engines entries. This can be supplied as compressed gas, liquid hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, or peroxide. So long as the fuel used is derived from hydrogen or a hydrogen compound. Preferably, green hydrogen, produced from a renewable energy source.
